Outdoor Altar and Garden of Sorrow and Hope at the Mother of the Redeemer Retreat Center

As some of you know, Andrew James Burkett came into this world and was immediately taken to heaven on September 2, 2015. He was the first child of Megan and Matthew Burkett, and the grandson of Harold and Joy Mauro, and Rich and Tami Speer. Although gone from their arms, his love remains forever deeply carved into their hearts. For the families, much solace and healing has taken place at the Mother of the Redeemer Retreat Center, often referred as “The Farm”. The Center is located west of Bloomington, Indiana and within the grounds is a parcel of land which has been dedicated as “Mary’s Children Cemetery”. It is the earthly resting place for baby Andrew, the first to be placed there.

As part of their healing, the families visit the Farm to enjoy the peace it provides. Since the loss of Andrew, working to enhance and maintain this beautiful setting has become a labor of love for the families. In addition to Andrew’s family, others who have suffered loss, or simply need a quiet healing place, have found comfort here as well.

To honor the memory of Andrew, and provide a place for others to experience the miraculous healing power of God, a memorial on the grounds of the Farm has been approved. Our memorial will be the “Andrew James Burkett Memorial Project”. The project will be completed in two phases. The first phase will include an Outdoor Altar area with a magnificent Crucifix overlooking “Mary’s Children Cemetery”. The second phase of the project will be “The Garden of Sorrow and Hope”. Each phase will include extensive site preparation, stonework, landscaping, lighting, and highlighted by three large beautiful bronze sculptures by world renown artist, Timothy P. Schmalz .
